Caring for Carers who Care

What is Fostering?

Fostering means

  • Looking after a child or young person in your own home
  • Providing a stable family environment
  • Attending meetings
  • Keeping written records
  • Promoting contact
  • Managing confidential information
  • Attending training

Foster Carers are extremely dedicated, flexible, non-judgmental, patient and have a sense of humour. All Foster Carers are self-employed and can only register with one Independent Fostering Agency or Local Authority at a time.

Record Keeping

  • Record keeping is an important part of Fostering.
  • Records have a two fold purpose.
    • Firstly it will provide the child with a diary of his / her childhood when the child is older.
    • Secondly it will protect you from allegations when incidents happen.
  • Daily recordings must be kept to record everything that has happened during the day, behavioural, educational, health, incidences etc.
  • Weekly recordings are a summary of the event of the week and should be used to highlight any issues of significance.
